Kinetic Mixing and the Supersymmetric Gauge Hierarchy

چکیده
The most general Lagrangian for a model with two U(1) gauge symmetries contains a renormalizable operator which mixes their gauge kinetic terms. Such kinetic mixing can be generated at arbitrarily high scales but will not be suppressed by large masses. In models whose supersymmetry (SUSY)breaking hidden sectors contain U(1) gauge factors, we show that such terms will generically arise and communicate SUSY-breaking to the visible sector through mixing with hypercharge. In the context of the usual supergravityor gauge-mediated communication scenarios with D-terms of order the fundamental scale of SUSY-breaking, this effect can destabilize the gauge hierarchy. Even in models for which kinetic mixing is suppressed or the D-terms are arranged to be small, this effect is a potentially large correction to the soft scalar masses and therefore introduces a new measurable low-energy parameter. We calculate the size of kinetic mixing both in field theory and in string theory, and argue that appreciable kinetic mixing is a generic feature of string models. We conclude that the possibility of kinetic mixing effects cannot be ignored in model-building and in phenomenological studies of the low-energy SUSY spectra. Radiative Fermion Mass Hierarchy in a Non-supersymmetric Unified Theory
In non-supersymmetric grand unified models a “radiative fermion mass hierarchy” can be achieved in which the spectrum of quark and lepton masses is determined entirely by physics at the unification scale, with many relations following from the unified gauge symmetry, and with the masses of the lightest family arising from loops. A simple, realistic, and predictive model of this kind is presente...
متن کاملBilarge neutrino mixing from supersymmetry with high-scale nonrenormalizable interactions
We suggest a supersymmetric (SUSY) explanation of neutrino masses and mixing, where nonrenormalizable interactions in the hidden sector generate lepton number violating Majorana mass terms for both right-chiral sneutrinos and neutrinos. It is found necessary to start with a superpotential including an array of gauge singlet chiral superfields. This leads to nondiagonal ∆L = 2 mass terms and alm...
متن کاملBilarge neutrino mixing from supersymmetry breaking: the role of high-scale parameters
We show how a bilarge neutrino mixing pattern can arise in a broken supersymmetric theory, in such a way that the difference with quark mixing is explained. Our basic assumption is that this difference is due to nonrenormalizable interactions involving hidden sector fields. Such interactions lend lepton number violating mass terms to both the right-handed neutrino and sneutrino fields. A superp...
متن کاملMass Hierarchy in a Supersymmetric Model with a Secluded U(1)′-Breaking Sector
We consider the Z ′/Z mass hierarchy in a supersymmetric model in which the U(1)′ is broken in a secluded sector coupled to the ordinary sector only by gauge and possibly soft terms. A large mass hierarchy can be achieved while maintaining the normal sparticle spectra if there is a direction in which the tree level potential becomes flat when a particular Yukawa coupling vanishes. We describe t...
متن کاملSoftly Broken Supersymmetric Desert from Orbifold Compactification
A new viewpoint for the gauge hierarchy problem is proposed: compactification at a large scale, 1/R, leads to a low energy effective theory with supersymmetry softly broken at a much lower scale, α/R. The hierarchy is induced by an extremely small angle α which appears in the orbifold compactification boundary conditions. The same orbifold boundary conditions break Peccei-Quinn symmetry, leadin...
